Allergens and dietary information

A lot of our customers have to be careful about what they eat, so this page sets out what’s in each cookie, how our kitchen works and where the limits are.

Made in a kitchen that handles nuts. Everything we bake is made in a single bakehouse that uses peanuts and tree nuts (almonds, pistachios and hazelnuts), as well as wheat, oats, milk, egg, soya and sulphites. We bake nut cookies on their own trays and clean down between batches, but we cannot guarantee that any of our products are free from traces of nuts. If you have a severe nut allergy, we’re sorry, but we don’t think our cookies are safe for you.

Allergen matrix

UK law lists fourteen allergens. None of our cookies contain celery, crustaceans, fish, lupin, molluscs or mustard, so those columns are left out. We don’t use sesame in the bakehouse at all.

● = contains as an ingredient. “may” = may contain traces because of our shared kitchen. Gluten comes from wheat or oats; the menu says which. Matrix last checked 2 November 2026. Recipes do change, so always read the label on the day.

Vegan cookies

Midnight, Bramble Oat and the Vegan Mince Pie contain no animal products. They’re mixed first thing with their own bowls and scoops, but they go in the same ovens as cookies with milk and egg in them, so they aren’t suitable for a severe milk or egg allergy.

Made without gluten

The Chocolate Chunk and Almond & Orange cookies use buckwheat, rice flour and ground almonds and have no gluten ingredients. Wheat flour is in the air in our bakehouse from 5am, though, so we don’t label them gluten-free and we wouldn’t recommend them to anyone with coeliac disease.

Vegetarian and halal

All our cookies are vegetarian. We don’t use gelatine, and our mincemeat uses vegetable suet. We aren’t halal-certified. The only animal fat we use is butter, and the only alcohol is the small amount in our vanilla extract.

Labels and how to check

In the shop, every cookie on the counter has a card listing its allergens, and the full ingredients folder lives at the end of the counter. Boxed and wrapped cookies carry a full ingredients label with allergens in bold, as the rules for food prepacked for direct sale require.

In our vending machines, each cookie is wrapped and labelled with its name, full ingredients, allergens and a best-before date. The card in each machine window shows which shelf holds which cookie.

Gift boxes and catering orders come with an allergen sheet, and we can label boxes for named guests. If your event needs a separate nut-free or vegan platter, tell us when you order and we’ll pack it separately and mark it clearly. The kitchen caveats above still apply.

Ask us

If you’ve a question about a particular ingredient, ring the shop on 0114 496 0372 or e-mail hello@ovenlark.co.uk. If it’s busy at the till, ask for the folder rather than taking someone’s best guess. Nobody will mind.
